What is a Work Order?

# What is a Work Order? ## What is it? A Work Order is a job card. It holds all the information about a job in one place — where it is, which customer it is for, which worker is assigned, what needs to be done, which materials are used, and how long the job took. Work Orders are the core of Outsmart. Almost everything in the system connects back to a Work Order. --- ## What can it do? - Store the job address, customer details, and a description of the work. - Show the planned date, start time, and assigned employee. - Hold forms filled in by the field worker (checklists, inspection reports, etc.). - Store photos and signatures collected during the job. - Track materials and items used on the job. - Record the hours worked by each employee. - Link to a quote or an invoice. - Be converted into a quote or an invoice once the job is complete. --- ## How to use it Field workers see their assigned Work Orders in the app as soon as a planner assigns them. Workers tap a Work Order to see the job details, address, and any forms they need to fill in. Planners and office staff create and manage Work Orders in the back office. See [Create a Work Order](create-a-work-order.md) for step-by-step instructions. --- ## Things to watch out for - A Work Order must have a status. The status tells everyone whether the job is planned, in progress, done, or cancelled. See [Work Order Statuses](work-order-statuses.md) for details. - Field workers can only see Work Orders assigned to them and in the right status. A Work Order in **Registered** status is not visible in the app. - You can link a Work Order to an Object (a piece of equipment or an asset). This helps you track the service history of that asset over time. --- ## See Also - [Create a Work Order](create-a-work-order.md) - [Work Order Statuses](work-order-statuses.md) - [Change the Date of a Work Order](change-the-date-of-a-work-order.md) - [Using the App](../mobile-app/using-the-app.md)
