Android vs iOS: Key Differences & Notifications
Introduction
OutSmart runs on both Android and iOS, but there are important differences. This guide covers what varies between platforms so you can set the right expectations for your team.
Feature Parity: What's the Same
Most features work identically on both platforms:
- ✅ View work orders | ✅ Start/stop timers | ✅ Register materials | ✅ Take photos | ✅ Fill out forms | ✅ Capture signatures | ✅ Submit work orders | ✅ Offline functionality
Key Differences
1. Push Notifications
Android: Push Notifications ✅
- Instant push notification when office assigns new work
- Sound and vibration alert
- Appears in notification center and on lock screen
iOS: Email Notifications Only ❌
- iOS does not allow OutSmart to send push notifications (Apple limitation)
- Instead, you receive an EMAIL when new work is assigned
- You must check your email to know about new jobs
- Email includes job summary and link to app
2. Device Registration
Both Platforms: One Device Per Employee
- Only one device (phone or tablet) can be registered per employee account
- If a technician tries to log in on a second device, they get: OtherDeviceRegisteredException
- How to resolve: Unregister the old device first, then register the new one
3. Performance & Speed
Android: Highly variable depending on device (budget vs. flagship). Budget Android phones may be slower; flagship phones (Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel) are very fast.
iOS: More consistent across all devices. Even older iPhones (6+) run reasonably fast. Newer iPhones are blazing fast.
Recommendation: If buying devices for your team, prefer newer iPhones or flagship Android phones over budget models.
System Requirements
Important: If an Android phone is running Android 7.x or older, it cannot install OutSmart. Users must upgrade their device.
Best Practices by Platform
For Android Users
- Make sure notifications are enabled in Android Settings → Apps → OutSmart → Notifications
- Tap the refresh button at the start of the day for fresh assignments
- If your device is slow, close other apps to free memory
For iOS Users
- Check your email regularly throughout the day for new work assignments
- Open the app each morning to ensure sync (do not rely on background sync alone)
- Make sure OutSmart is allowed to access Camera, Location (for maps), in Settings
